08/13/12:     BHS '59 Public Celebration Invitation to BHS '60:

From Steve Mugglebee, BHS '59
A personal invitation to the Class of '60

The big public celebration for the launch and book signing of the Class of '59's book, The Greatest High School Class, Ever is coming up on September 8th at the new [Beverly] high school. On behalf of [my] class, I want to extend a personal invitation to the Class of '60 to join in the fun. It will be more like a joint reunion party, with everyone who grew up together during the 40s and 50s. I can assure you that you and your classmates will find a lot to laugh over and remember at the celebration. There will be a guided tour of the new high school for those who haven't yet visited that magnificent facility. Also, a bunch of '59ers will be attending the BHS football game that afternoon at Hurd stadium, and hope others join us. We all got along great in high school, and that is what the book is all about. We want to share this historic event with every BHS class and the entire town, so please pass the word and hope to see you there.

11 am to 1 pm - football game after

04/08/05:  HELP!     Was Deane Palmer's First Name Really Norman?

Bill Shay, BHS '59, has been meticulously researching some facts for my Camp Herrick website. One of our contemporaries at Camp Herrick was Deane Palmer BHS '60, who happens to be one of our deceased classmates. We are trying to establish the date and details of his death. It seems his first name might actually have been Norman. I have an obituary for a Norman Deane Palmer who died in Missouri in 1985, and who worked at GE. There was a Joan E. Palmer in BHS '58. Was she his sister? I think Deane lived in Centerville, not sure. I know he worked at GE in the early sixties because I saw him there.

4th MEETING of the BHS CLASS of 1960 REUNION COMMITTEE
             (Reunion to be held in early fall, 2005)

10/24/04:  The fourth meeting of the BHS Class of 1960 45th Reunion Committee was held on Friday, October 22, 2004.

Present: Kathy Healey, Co-Chair; Andrea (Raymond) Stackpole, Secretary; Jeanne (LeClair) Cammett; Lori (Wait) Dupont; Rowena (Robinson) Flynn; Barbara (Dumphy) Hoar; Ann Mahoney; and Bill Nisbet, Co-Chair.

There was no correspondence to discuss. If you would like to write to the committee, here is the address:

Andrea Stackpole, Secretary
BHS Class of 1960 Reunion Committee
8 Kernwood Heights
Beverly MA 01950
Click Here to Email Andrea
978-922-7939

Carol (Thibodeau) Marciano has volunteered to help Rowena (Robinson) Flynn on the Publicity Subcommittee.

Because the feedback preferences for time of year are running 2 to 1 in favor of fall over summer, after discussion, we narrowed the dates to September 24, October 1, and October 22, 2005 of course. The gap in the last two dates was in consideration of the Jewish holidays.

We have narrowed the format of the reunion to bistro tables interspersed with small regular tables, laid out for easier mingling. Substantial hors d'oeuvres followed by a desert selection, from several serving stations scattered around the room, spread over several hours, is in favor right now, rather than a large buffet. There is at least one more possible reunion location to be investigated before these decisions are final.

The dress will be "Casual Classic," which means you can wear about anything you feel comfortable in, including suits and ties, no ties, slacks, dresses, gowns, whatever. Specifically excluded will be blue jeans, shorts, T-shirts, and bare feet.

We want to hire a live band that can play dance music and the oldies. Selecting a band is the most important decision we will make for a successful reunion. The committee welcomes any suggestions from our classmates, and in fact would like to hear your thoughts on various bands you may have seen recently. We need to know their availability for the dates mentioned above and the cost for them to play for four hours.

You have helped shape the reunion coming up in 2005. We appreciated your opinion on various ideas. Thanks.

3rd MEETING of the BHS CLASS of 1960 REUNION COMMITTEE
             (Reunion to be held sometime in 2005)

09/21/04:  The third meeting of the BHS Class of 1960 45th Reunion Committee was held on Friday, September 10, 2004. There were many new faces, which we were glad to see. Some new ideas were advanced as a result (see below).

Present: Jeanne (LeClair) Cammett, Ray Charland, Lori (Wait) Dupont, Rowena (Robinson) Flynn, Barbara (Dumphy) Hoar, Kathy Healey, Ann Mahoney, Carol (Thibodeau) Marciano, Bill Nisbet, Andrea (Raymond) Stackpole, and Bill Stanley

Feedback comments from classmates were discussed, including some negative and positive aspects of the 2001 "41+1" reunion. These included: (1) The loudness of the DJ made it necessary for some people, trying to reconnect with classmates not seen for ages, had to actually move their conversations out of the room to Angelica's lobby, In some cases, even outdoors to the parking lot. (2) Someone noted that people were not ready to sit down when requested. This probably means they would have preferred to stand around and talk longer than "allowed." (3) Many said it was perfect as is. Keep the next one the same. Why fool around with a winner? (4) One acute insight was that the large tables forced the group to break up into groups of eight or ten, a configuration that tended to remain all evening. This prevented easy communication with people at other tables. Solutions to some of these problems were proposed.

Preferences for time of year seem to be running 2 to 1 in favor of fall over summer. Summer was originally chosen because of the abundance of activities already in place during Beverly Homecoming.

New ideas discussed included: (1) Have the reunion at the old BHS (now Brisco). (2) Use bistro tables, rather than large round or banquet tables, for easier mingling. (3) Serve really substantial hors d'oeuvres over several hours, rather than a large buffet. (4) Hire a live band that can play dance music and the oldies, an alternative to a disc jockey. (5) Hold the reunion at a hotel, so reservations can be made for classmates traveling a great distance, or for those who want to relax and have a few drinks and not have to drive home afterward.

We have formed a committee to check out variuos places for rooms, function halls, menus, and price comparisons. We have also formed a publicity committee, and a Newsletter committee.

We are investigating various bands as an alternative to disc jockeys.

You can help shape the reunion coming up in 2005. Give us your opinion on these new ideas.

2nd MEETING of the NEW BHS CLASS of 1960 REUNION COMMITTEE
             (Reunion to be held sometime in 2005)

08/21/04:  The second meeting of the BHS Class of 1960 45th Reunion Committee was held on Friday, June 18, 2004. Among other things, we discussed various ideas and options for the 45th reunion to be held sometime in 2005. You can help shape the reunion coming up in 2005. Click Here to See How!.

Also, there was a discussion about the upcoming Picnic in the Park. This year a rain location was available. There was also some discussion on producing a hardcopy newsletter particularly for those classmates who do not have email.

Committee members in attendance were Kathy Healey, Bill Nisbet, Andrea (Stackpole) Raymond, Bill Stanley, and Doreen (Thompson) and Ray Charland.

BEVERLY HIGH ALUMNI Site Temporarily Down
             (A Solution is in Progress)

02/08/04: That site (beverlyhighalumni.com) has been down for several days. It is a not a technical issue but rather a financial one. Several of us, including myself, are working on resolving this. At the moment it looks like it will be "off the air" for a few days at the least. A solution is in progress; it is being attended to. Thanks for your patience. Picnic at Lynch Park
Friday, August 1, 2003 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
(There is NO Rain Location)

This is the first Friday night of Beverly Homecoming Week. If you were ever a member of the Beverly High School Class of 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, or 1962 you are specifically invited. In actual fact, everyone is welcome. This event is completely free, including the parking after 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Refreshments are available at Dick & June's Ice Cream stand. Some of the people that showed up in the past actually brought a picnic lunch. Please feel free to do so. Most treat this like an old fashioned gab fest. Meet some old friends; make some new friends. You might want your own folding chairs, little tables, and what ever else you need for comfort. There are picnic tables there, but they cannot be moved, so they cannot be grouped together.

Here you can see PHOTOS from the Picnic at Lynch Park - Friday, 07/27/01.

Snow Train to Vermont

This is NOT an official BHS Class of 1960 activity, but rather an idea a few of your classmates were talking about to break up the long winter with a little fun. There is a February snow train trip to Vermont, sponsored by the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts. If you wish to participate you must order the tickets from them.

Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts Website

According to the MBRRE, "Travel to the snow-covered foothills of southern Vermont aboard the Mass. Bay Railroad Enthusiasts' specially chartered Amtrak train, the VERMONT SNOW EXPRESS. Relax with family and friends as we traverse CSX Transportation's Boston main line from Boston and western suburbs to Palmer, Mass., and then head northward on the New England Central Railroad along the banks of the Connecticut River to Brattleboro and Bellows Falls, Vermont. Our train will consist of Amtrak intercity coaches and café cars with reclining seats and fold-down tray tables. All coaches are equipped with rest rooms. Light snacks and beverages will be available from the Amtrak Café cars, or you may bring your own picnic lunch or dinner. Our complimentary trip brochure, distributed on board, details scenic and historic points of interest along our route. Our return to Boston will be at approximately 9:00 P.M., subject to operating conditions. The VERMONT SNOW EXPRESS will run one day only, rain, snow or shine."

There are quite a few optional activities available during a four-hour stopover in Brattleboro. You must sign up for them in advance. Transportation to activity locations is included in the option price. Contrary to the previous notice in this space, the private observation car, Caritas, will be in the consist. There will not be any regular commuter day cars, just modern, comfortable Amtrak intercity coaches. You can check out all the details here:

SNOW TRAIN TO VERMONT (this coming February 22, 2003)

If you want to sit with friends you must order the tickets as a group. I noticed from last year's write-up for the same trip that some activities are sold out quite soon. I suggest that if you are at all interested, you should check this out and sign up as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, Ann and I will not be able to participate as she will be on beeper duty that weekend.

08/09/02 - Final Report on the Picnic in the Park held Friday, 08/02/02: The only thing that prevents me from calling this a total failure is the fact that those few who did attend appeared to enjoy themselves. One of my friends in our class said, "Maybe there's something to your feeling that our class is less interested in getting together than other classes." I think she and I are onto something.

I sent out about 130 email notices twice, and 190 postcards twice to each member of BHS '60 without an email address. A total of ten (10) of our classmates showed up. Three of those did not have email addresses, but I am in contact with one by phone from time to time. Therefore, most of the expense money detailed in the table on the left brought in exactly two of our classmates.

The weather looked unsettled, but did hold off for two hours, enabling those who attended to sit around and chat for a couple of hours. There are 93 of our classmates thought to be living in Beverly right now, several within easy walking distance. Despite the weather I would have expected many BHS '60 classmates, counting spouses, to care enough to at least put in an appearance.

By contrast, I sent 20 email messages twice to members of the Beverly High School Class of 1958 for whom I had a valid email address. Seven (7) showed up. Does this tell us anything, besides the fact I should see a shrink to find out why I even bothered?

Seriously folks, it really doesn't look like there is very much interest in class events between reunions. There were quite a few BHS '60 members at this event last year. I think the difference is our "40+1" reunion was the next night then. Something else to be learned from my experience is that postcards seem to have delivery problems. About one dozen postcards were returned to me as undeliverable when they were, in fact, addressed correctly. I made many phone calls all over the country to track down correct addresses. I recommend, in the future, that notices and announcements only be sent by first class mail. I have a hunch that many postcards were simply not delivered, addressed correctly or not.

IS THERE ANY INTEREST IN ANOTHER EVENT THIS YEAR?

A few of us were tossing around the idea of holding a "Class of '60 Turns 60" party or open house in early fall for classmates and their spouses or friends. I imagine some of us are ready while others might not want to have it rubbed in (the big SIX O, I mean). I see this as a daytime event, perhaps at someone's house or elsewhere, with each family bringing something...potluck, with gas grill available, maybe.

This is in the talking stage right now - there are no plans yet...just testing the waters. Considering the facts in the preceding notice, I'd say this isn't going to fly unless we hear from folks soon on this.

I have heard other suggestions that range from a large-group, low-cost trip to Las Vegas to an all day cruise or fall foliage trip down the Merrimac River.

Let's hear from those that would attend something.
(Bill Nisbet, Webmaster)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
07/23/02 - The second, follow-up postcard inviting our classmates (BHS '60) to the "Picnic in the Park" this coming August 2nd was mailed out today. There were 188 postcards in that batch. The last mass mailing was 193. Although we have 20+ more email address this time around, several others turned out to be invalid, making more eligible for a postcard. Also, I sent one to everyone on last year's Reunion Committee so they would have a copy. Postage has gone up a few cents since the last time, too.
(Bill Nisbet, Webmaster)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
07/22/02 - Advertising the "The Picnic in the Park II," the second, follow-up emailing to BHS Classes 1958, 59, 60, and 1962 was completed today. The 2nd notice to the Class of 1961 was sent out, too, but I'm afraid many did not receive the original notice. Sorry about that - the first time I could not tell how many message made it, due to many invalid email addresses and CompuServe problems occurring at the same time. The percentage of obsolete email addresses posted on beverlyhighalumni.com is around 15%.

To update your email address there, click on the link at the top of this page for beverlyhighalumni.com. When on the 1960 Alumni Page there, go to the bottom of that page and click on where is says "Add Your Name." Simply explain the problem and they will fix it for you. That is how you can add, update or correct your posting there, too. An alternate method is to simply email Karen Christensen at webmaster@beverlyhighalumni.com.
(Bill Nisbet, Webmaster)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
06/30/02 - A mass emailing to members of the BHS classes of 1958, 59, 61 and 62, inviting them to the "Picnic in the Park" this coming August 2nd, is almost complete. I used the email addresses from each member's posting on the Beverly High Alumni site (beverlyhighalumni.com). A major problem is that a high percentage of addresses were invalid, which illustrates how important it is to keep everyone apprised of email address changes, or why post it in the first place? I think there is also some cases where a short message containing a URL does not pass through spam filters. Too bad, because I think many would enjoy the gabfest if they knew about it. I did ask that those receiving my message to please notify as many of their classmates as possible. We'll see. (Bill Nisbet)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
06/25/02 - I am in the process of getting permission to use full names in the captions for recent photos. Site policy requires permission. As you can see on the Comments From Your Classmates page, there is a common complaint of not being able to recognize people in recent images. I will update or add captions from time to time. If you see yourself in recent photos and don't mind your full name in the caption, PLEASE let me know. Thanks! (Bill Nisbet)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
06/23/02 - There is going to be a follow-up mailing of postcards sometime next week announcing the "Picnic in the Park II" to be held August 02, 2002 at Lynch Park (see below for details). Postcards are only sent to our classmates without email addresses, so PLEASE...if you have not told us your email address, do so now and save your class a little postage. Your email address won't be published and you won't be spammed either. Just send a message to the Webmaster at the bottom of any page on this site. Thanks! (Bill Nisbet)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
05/25/01 - Today the last of 191 postcards making two announcements for our class were snail-mailed to our classmates who do not have an email addresses. Bhs60.com was announced as the official URL for the BHS Class of 1960. The second announcement was a version of the next announcement below, i.e., "The Picnic in the Park II."

Those of you with email addresses save your class postage money. Please let us know if it changes. Thanks! (Bill Nisbet)

Our Second Annual "Picnic in the Park" will be held late Friday afternoon on August 2, 2002, at Lynch Park, from around 5:00 p.m. until dusk. Anyone may attend, of course, and we especially would like to see members from the Beverly High School Classes of 1958 - 1962. Spouses, family and friends are all welcome. You may come early if you like.

As before, this event is completely free, including parking at Lynch Park after 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon. There will not be any food or drink served, so you need to bring your own food and refreshments if you want them, or enjoy Dick and June's concession. The picnic tables there are not moveable, so you might want your own folding chairs, little tables, and what ever else you need for comfort. There will be a DJ for our entertainment from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Here you can see PHOTOS from the first annual Picnic at Lynch Park - Friday, 07/27/01. NOTE: You need to hit the "BACK" button or arrow to return directly back here after you view them.

WE NOW HAVE OUR OWN URL: Today, 04/15/2002, bhs60.com was registered as the URL for the BHS Class of 1960. I would have preferred bhs60.org, as we are an organization rather than a commercial enterprise, but that was already taken. Anyway, most people expect a URL to end in "dot com" so perhaps this is best.

If you are a Beverly High School Class of 1960 graduate, or were ever in our class, this is your Website. Tell me what you would like to see. Do you have any pictures from our high school years? Rest assured that no personal information about anyone will be posted on this site without specific permission.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CLASS VOTES TO HOLD A 45TH REUNION: At the "40+1" reunion on July 28, 2001, the Reunion Committee asked those in attendance if they would like to hold a 45th reunion. By show of hands, the overwhelming majority indicated yes. So all of you that had such a great time on July 28, 2001, and those of you that missed out on one of the best reunions yet, can now look forward to another in four years.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CLASS VOTES YES ON HAVING OUR OWN WEBSITE: If we are to have a reunion in four years, it is very important that the class keep in touch. We must keep our addresses, phone numbers, and especially our email addresses current. Only one way to keep in touch was proposed to the class, and that was to sponsor our own Web site. Again, by show of hands, the majority present voted yes for this idea. Alternative ideas and specific details were not discussed. The purpose of this Website is to help BHS '60 stay in touch and keep closer together, at least until 2005, to help make the 45th reunion a great success. Nobody wants to go through the work of locating everyone all over again in four years, especially since the "lost" classmate list has been trimmed from around 150 to 64.

REPORT on 2004 42nd ANNUAL BEVERLY - FLORIDA REUNION
03/19/04 - From Art Bennett:

Date: Mar 02, 2004 18:00
Name: Art Bennett
Email: datpa32@yahoo.com

Comments: The 42nd annual Beverly-Florida Reunion was held for the second time at the Clearwater Country Club in Clearwater, Fla. on February 28.

Dave Tomeo, the President of the Beverly/Florida Reunion Committee welcomed everyone on this beautiful Florida day that had sunshine and weather in the 70s. When the social hour started at 10:30 a.m., the bar was open and many in the crowd began working on their Bloody Marys, seeing old friends, sharing stories and having lots of laughs. By 1:00 p.m., it was time to get down to business and eat. There were approximately about 150 people that showed up including 30 new faces.

Bruce Carnevale started off with prayer and we had a moment of silence for some of our Beverly friends who had passed on. When all that was finished, we had a fantastic lunch.

The staff of Judy Greenleaf Briggs, Irene Godbout Laurie, Bruce Carnevale, Shirley Doane Davis and Jeane Sullivan did a great job of organizing this years event. We missed Terri Farmer Mikszenas a loyal committee member and look forward to her attending next year. Judy is still, after 29 years, the engine that makes this event run. She's untiring, dedicated and enjoys every moment in organizing the event.

Some of the folks that looked fantastic were Charlie Amore, Crystal Atherton, Bob Atherton, Mrs. Butterworth, our lawyer of the day Al Ricci and many others.

After lunch the raffle began. There were many lucky winners who walked away with some wonderful gifts. Many of the gifts were in the wine family. You can imagine what gifts went first with this Beverly crowd.

When the raffle was over at about 3 p.m., a few news events were mentioned. One was that the 2nd Annual Beverly High School Athletic Hall of Fame was to be at the Danversport Yacht Club on March 6th. Some of the Beverly's greatest athletes will be inducted and everyone that is in Beverly during that weekend should attend. Names like Harry Ball, Roger Pierce, Mike Tomeo, Charlie Manuel, Mike Gilligan, Clammy Foster, Tony Divencenzo, Chuck Taylor, Fred Carnevale, Rick Mazzei, Kelly LaComte, Julie Peterson, Jay Rice and Al Turner. These are some of the greatest to have ever represented Beverly High School.

The second major story was that next year they'll be a golf outing prior to the luncheon. Bruce Carnevale and Art Bennett are in charge of the event and have already signed up 16 men and women for next years First Annual Beverly/Florida Reunion Golf Tournament.

That last order was to tell everyone to drive safely when you leave. However, many just stayed around and continued conversations & cocktails planing next years trip for the 43rd Reunion. We were very pleased and proud to see so many new faces and what wonderful things people were saying about the whole event.

The Beverly-Florida officers and board members vowed that as good as this year was, 2005 will be better and were shooting for 200 to attend next year. We will be returning to Clearwater Country Club with a bigger and better program than before.

If you would like to be put on the mailing list for the next function on February 26th, 2005 please contact Dave Tomeo at 813-263-3379 or e-mail: dtomeo1@tampabay.rr.com. Start planning your trip to Florida during the weekend of the 26th, 2005, you'll be glad you did.

REPORT on 2003 41st ANNUAL BEVERLY - FLORIDA REUNION
03/31/03 - From Dave Tomeo BHS '65:

This is a duplicate of Dave Tomeo's [BHS '65] report he posted on the Beverly High Alumni bulletin board regarding this year's Beverly - Florida Reunion (posted with his permission by Bill Nisbet, Webmaster):

Comments: March 1, 2003, the 41st annual Beverly-Florida Reunion was held for the first time at the Clearwater Country Club in Clearwater, Florida. It was a beautiful Florida day that had sunshine and weather in the 80's. We had an excellent turnout and a wonderful meal prepared by Chef Randall Tilton, formerly of Beverly.

When the social hour started at 10:30AM the bar was open and many in the crowd started working on their Bloody Marys, seeing old friends, sharing stories and having allot of laughs. By 12:30PM it was time to get down to business and eat. Many in the crowd said it was the best meal they've had in years at these functions and the desert was outstanding. John Carnevale started off with prayer and we had a moment of silence for some of our Beverly friends that has passed on. When all that was finished we had a fantastic lunch.

The next order of business was electing a new president and new officers. Dave Tomeo was elected President, Judy (Greenleaf) Briggs, Secretary/Treasurer. Board Members elected were Irene (Godbout) Laurie, Bruce Carnevale and Terry (Farmer) Mikszenas. Judy (Greenleaf) Briggs is still after 28 years is the engine that makes this event run. She's untiring and dedicated to keep this reunion alive and well.

After the officers were named the raffle began. There were many lucky winners who walked away with some wonderful gifts. Many of the gifts were in the wine family. You can imagine what gifts went first with this Beverly crowd. When the raffle was over about 3PM many stayed around and continued conversations that were halted due to the festivities. We were so pleased and proud to see so many happy faces and what wonderful things people were saying about the whole event.

The Beverly-Florida officers and board members vowed that as good as this year was, they said wait till next year. We hope to return to Clearwater Country Club with a bigger and better program than this year. If you would like to be put on the mailing list for this wonderful function please contact Dave Tomeo. 08/12/02 - From Patricia (MacFarland) Till:
Patricia (MacFarland) Till wrote me to say she is moving to Florida this coming September 16, and she wishes to contact other classmates in that state. As you know I do not give out addresses and phone numbers without permission, so this message was snail-mailed to our Florida classmates without an email address, and emailed for our Floridians with an email address. Perhaps you would like to contact her and make her feel welcome? Pat does not have email. Email me for her mailing address. (from Pat Till - through Bill Nisbet)

04/17/02 - From Sandra (Toneatti) MacKay, on Ann Deering:
"...we were in Rainbow together...she was in a horrible accident where she was expected not to live, so she was very seriously injured...months later as she was coming out of that, a bunch of us from Rainbow went to visit her at her folks' home where we had had so many parties. She was getting around on her own at that time, but [she was still] impaired."

Because of this good news I have removed Ann Deering from the "In Memoriam" list to the "Missing Classmates" list. We do not know where she is, but we now know she did survive that terrible accident. My sincere apologies for having her on the wrong list.
